Bayer 7393 Contour Usb Blood Glucose Monitoring System, Black

I have been using this item for several days now and It is much easier to use than my Accu-Chek that I was given.
The item is easy to carry in the provided pouch. It is easy to use (insert test strip, reads glucose levels quickly, and lets you easily select between pre meal and post meal testing).
The lancet that comes with the item is much easier on my fingers than the one I had with my Accu-Chek. Bayers lancet provides a sample immediately (without having to squeeze my finger very much if at all) and the pain is almost non-existant (unlike my Accu-Chek one which hurt quite a bit).
Now for the software. I love that it stores the information in a program so I can easily watch trends and see what happens when I eat certain foods and when I exercise. I just don’t seem to be able to keep a written log so this is great. The charting could be a little better laid out and easier to read but overall it is quite good. I will be using this and printing out a chart for my next doctors visit so he can see how my medication is working (I have been diagnosed only about three months now).
The part that I didn’t like, and if corrected would give it a five star rating, is that on my Mac I have to start the program manually from the flash drive each time I insert it. I wish the software would install on my system and automatically start and download the readings when I plug in the unit. I don’t know why others are having such trouble with using this on Macs but mine works flawlessly and except for this minor issue I just stated, it works without problems.
I would highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants an easy to carry package, who wants to keep track of their readings in an easy to use software package (even Macs), and who wants less pain from their lancet. This is by far the best system that I have used to date and I really don’t see any others out there that can beat it.
I bought this USB Glucose meter based on the favorable review of Walter Mossberg in the Wall Street Journal. It looks great and was easy to set up. Unfortunately, the software failed to load on my computer. I went to Bayer’s website to see if there was a later release. There was not. I called Bayer customer service and was told that the device is not supported on Windows 7 64-bit computers. I had no choice but to return it. Return was a hassle. I easily printed a return shipping label on Dec 22. The tracking system shows it was received on December 29. As of January 7, no refund has been issued.
This product will not work on MAC OS Snow Leopard and you should not buy it if you have a Mac using Snow Leopard.
Once the meter is hooked up to the Mac USB port and you manage to open the GlucoFacts software you will get an error: “Bayer Glucofacts quit unexpectantly while using the BayerHIDOO.dll plug-in.” and the program quits.
To be sure, I even downloaded the software from the Bayer website (after giving away much personal information) and that software too crashes for the same reason.
Overall, this meter is awesome. It is really small, and if you use a smaller container for your test strips, the case is pretty small too.
This product does not work with Windows 7 as of 7/12/2010. I have tried and I’ve read that many other people have too. I have a degree in Computer Science, so I am no newbie to computers. Windows 7 just won’t work with it.
But, if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, there is a feature called XP Mode. This will allow you to somewhat-easily run the software in Windows XP on your Windows 7 computer. Doing it this way works flawlessly (Though it is a bit more complicated).
The software does what I need it to do. It is not as bad as my Onetouch software which looked archaic.
My old meter did not have the capability to make notes on the reading from the meter. This made interpreting the results later almost impossible because I do not eat at the same time each day. Now I can mark before/after meal, or feeling sick, and I can see in the report what was going on when I tested it.
The test strip light is somewhat useless to me. It illuminates the test strip and that’s it. It is not bright enough to let me see if I have enough blood drawn on my finger. It is also not bright enough to be able to grab a test strip from the container and insert it the right side up. Also it turns off too soon. This doesn’t bother me, though, because I have no need for it anyway.
The screen is very easy to read with nice bright colors to indicate when the sugar is too high or too low.
I am glad I bought this meter. It is nice to see some innovation in glucose meters finally. I would recommend this meter to anyone who has diabetes.
Great meter, made in Japan (NOT China), and has many useful features..I had absoultely no problems installing the S/W on Windows 7 and using the meter. Had it up and running in, literally, 15 minutes… even with a minor installation mistake in the process. Some other people here obviously don’t know what they’re doing. They just aren’t adept in using such devices and should just stick to crayons. Glad I bought it.
